12 Monkeys, AKA Twelve Monkeys, is a 1995 neo-noir sci-fi film directed by Terry Gilliam, inspired by Chris Marker‘s 1962 short film La Jetée, and starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, and Brad Pitt, with Christopher Plummer and David Morse in supporting roles. After Universal Studios acquired the rights to remake La Jetée as a full-length film, David and Janet Peoples were hired to write the script.

Under Gilliam’s direction, Universal granted the filmmakers a $29.5 million budget, and filming lasted from February to May 1995. The film was shot mostly in Philadelphia and Baltimore, where the story was set.

12 Monkeys 1995 Movie Plot:

An intense film about time travel, this Sci-Fi entry was directed by Terry Gilliam, a member of the comedy troupe Monty Python. The film stars Bruce Willis as James Cole, a prisoner of the state within the year 2035 who can earn parole if he agrees to travel back in time and thwart a devastating plague. The virus has exhausted most of the Earth’s population and therefore the remainder live underground because the air is poisonous.

Returning to the year 1990, six years before the beginning of the plague, Cole is soon imprisoned during a psychiatric facility because his warnings sound like hell ravings. There he meets a scientist named Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) and Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), the mad son of an eminent virologist (Christopher Plummer). Cole is returned by the authorities to the year 2035, and eventually finishes up at his intended destination in 1996. He kidnaps Dr. Railly so as to enlist her help in his quest. Cole discovers graffiti by a clear animal rights group called the military …

Great story keeps you glued to your seat. Representation is extraordinary. There are numerous layers during this film and that they are coordinated masterfully in order that their isn’t one boring moment during this film. Bruce and Brad are fantastic as always. Put all this together it is a feast for a movie buff.
