Review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023 Movie):
User Review:
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 The final installment directed by James Gunn before he went on to become the head of DC, was expected to be his most dedicated work yet. However, the result turned out to be a disappointment, as if Gunn only came to close the chapter and pass to Marvel. The entire storyline was filled with repetition and played safe, similar to his previous work on “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”.
I won’t talk too much about Rocket since most of his scenes venture into spoiler territory but I enjoyed how we learn so much more about him as the story progresses. Rocket has always been an enigmatic character, never revealing any helpful information about his past, so to see this much focus placed on him was a great creative decision. Bradley Cooper definitely shines as the voice of Rocket, injecting a lot of emotion into his performance, which is easier said than done considering he is technically a talking racoon. As for Groot, there isn’t much to say except that he’s still the Groot we know and love. I mean, you’ve got to applaud Vin Diesel for his uncanny ability to say “I am Groot” with such convincing inflections.
However, I think Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock was a mixed bag at best. Though I liked how seriously Poulter played the character, there weren’t really enough parts in the film that let him to stand out too much. Personally, I blame this on the aforementioned poor choice of having three conflicting stories happening at once but it’s also possible this was done as a way to set things up for future MCU events. Regardless, I think Poulter’s Warlock was fairly decent, even he didn’t leave as much of an impression as I had hoped.
When considering the varying quality of post-Endgame MCU content, I would say that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is one of the more interesting entries in this long-running cinematic universe. It may not blow your mind with the usual superhero action nor will it make you frequently laugh with its comic relief, but it should hopefully make you care just enough about its characters to appreciate their evolution over time. With all of that in mind, this film has me cautiously optimistic that the future of the MCU can still be good, even it has seen better days.
